about

This song really got started in an attempt to make use of augmented chords. The working title (before lyrics) was "Augmented Madness." I decided that with the moody sound of the half-time section it should tell a story, and I started exploring this ambiguous story about this person that nobody really seemed to understand very well.

lyrics

Outside under swollen skies
When the creek began to rise...

In our town this girl lived, never knew her name
But she would always hang around
Out there past the truck stop, out front of her trailer
Hours sitting on the ground

When the river began to swell

No one seemed to notice if she needed help
Or even if she was out there
With the water rising, I knew there was trouble
I could feel it in the air

We had almost made it, and when we arrived
I saw her trying to hold on
It happened so fast when I was reaching for her
In an instant she was gone

And just like that, it was over

Last thing I saw of her was the shadow of a smile
Under her lonely frown
Guess I'll never know why she didn't look afraid
As the water dragged her down
